Postgraduate scholarships for international students
Anne Wexler Australian-American Public Policy Scholarships
The Anne Wexler Australian-American Public Policy Scholarship, supported by the Australian Government, provides an opportunity for Australian and American postgraduate students with strong academic credentials and leadership potential to undertake a Master’s degree the United States in the field of public policy for up to two years.

The Anne Wexler Scholarships are part of the Australian Government’s Australia Awards Program and are funded through the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and administered by the Australian-American Fulbright Commission.

Valued at up to $A140,000, this scholarship supports up to two years of study or research in the United States. The Scholarship can be started anytime between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2013.

Two Wexler Scholarships will be awarded annually. One for an Australian citizen to enrol in a U.S. Masters degree program in Public Policy and one for an American (US) citizen to enrol in an Australian Masters program in Public Policy

Australian Development Scholarships
Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are a highly-valued form of development cooperation between Australia and partner countries with which Australia has a bilateral aid program. ADS provide partner countries with the opportunity to strengthen its human resource capacity through offering scholarships to individuals within key institutions, to undertake tertiary studies in Australia in areas relevant to the development needs of the country.

Scholarships are primarily for postgraduate study, however a limited number of undergraduate scholarships are available in specific countries. Applicants for ADS must satisfy both the general eligibility criteria and specific criteria established for each country. Australian Leadership Awards
The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) is a new Australian Government program which provides scholarships and fellowships for current and future leaders from the Asia-Pacific Region.

Australian Leadership Awards are awarded to people who are already leaders or have a potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the Asia and Pacific region.

"Awards are open to all fields of study, however, study programs that relate to the priority themes of international trade, pandemics, security and climate change, including clean energy are encouraged." (Extract from the ALA web site).

University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS)
The University of Sydney invites candidates who are eligible to undertake a Postgraduate Research Degree or Master's by Research program at this University to apply for the University of Sydney International Research Scholarship (USydIS).

The objective of the USydIS is to attract top quality international postgraduate students to undertake research projects which will enhance the University's research activities. The USydIS is open to all research disciplines, however participation in the USydIS program each semester is at the discretion of the Dean of each faculty. These scholarships will be awarded to eligible applicants twice a year – in October/November in conjunction with the International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) for commencement in Semester 1 (March), and in early April for commencement in Semester 2 (July).

The USydIS will cover tuition fees and living allowance for up to three years with a possibility of one semester's extension for PhD students.

Applicants who wish to be considered for the IPRS and USydIS awards for semester 1, may indicate this by completing the relevant section of the Postgraduate Research Application form. To be considered for an award for semester 1, applications for admission to a research degree MUST be received by the International Student Office by 31 July of the previous year.

To be considered for the USydIS for semester 2, applications for admission to a research degree MUST be received by the International Student Office by 31 December of the previous year.
University of Sydney – China Scholarship Council Research Schemes
Please Note that applications for the 2011 intake of the University of Sydney-China Scholarship Council Postgraduate Research Studentship have now closed. Applications will open again in late 2011 for commencement of studies in semester 2, 2012.

The University of Sydney and the China Scholarship Council offer two prestigious programmes to support Chinese Scholars.
University of Sydney World Scholars
The University of Sydney World Scholars awards are for commencing international students from selected participating countries, who will undertake a PhD in any discipline. The application process is highly competitive, with scholarships awarded on the basis of research potential and academic merit. Scholarship applicants should demonstrate in their PhD application an outstanding academic track record and capacity to engage in innovative and world class research.

The World Scholars awards cover the full cost of tuition fees plus a living allowance of AUD $10,000 per annum for a maximum of three years. A travel contribution of up to AUD $1,250 each way is also provided.

How to apply

World Scholars candidates must submit a PhD application and receive a Firm Offer of Admission, with no conditions attached, prior to lodging a World Scholars application.

Once a Firm Offer of Admission has been received, candidates should complete the World Scholars Application Form and submit it to the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of Sydney.

Faculty of Arts Postgraduate International Coursework Scholarships
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers a limited number of scholarships to outstanding international students undertaking a postgraduate coursework Master degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. These scholarships cover the tuition fees for the duration of the course.

Eligibility
Applicants must:

- have received an unconditional offer of admission to a Master degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This means that applicants must have met the Faculty's English language requirements, as well as academic admission requirements. For information on English language requirements, please visit the International Office website.
- have a minimum of 7.0 IELTS (overall) or equivalent if they are from a non-English speaking background
- be commencing postgraduate study at the University for the first time
- be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand, and may not hold permanent residency in Australia
- NOT be in receipt of any other tuition fee scholarship

Selection
There is strong competition for these scholarships. Selection is based on academic merit, including excellent results in the applicant's English language test. Applicants should provide a statement regarding why they want to undertake their chosen program and what they hope to achieve following graduation. Please note: It is very important that applicants make clear the degree for which they are applying.

Scholarship Benefits
These scholarships exempt students from the international student tuition fees for the duration of the course.

Items NOT covered by the IPCS include:

- a living allowance
- travel or relocation costs
- accommodation
- overseas fieldwork costs
- visa application fees
- tuition fees for any units beyond those required for the completion of the degree
- text books
- overseas student health cover (OSHC)
- other forms of insurance

Commencement Date
Scholarships are awarded on the basis that the student will commence study in the academic year for which it is offered, and for the program in which a place has been offered in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. A scholarship holder may defer commencement of the program of study, and of the award of a scholarship, for only one semester only.

Duration
The scholarship is limited to the standard duration of the course.
Leave

Scholarship holders may in special circumstances take leave of absence from their scholarship for a maximum of one semester. Students must check their visa conditions before applying for leave; and they must apply for permission in advance of taking such leave.

Transferring Scholarships
These scholarships cannot be transferred from one institution to another, nor from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences to another faculty in the University of Sydney.

Termination of Scholarships

Scholarships will be terminated:

- if the student fails to meet the eligibility requirements
- if the student fails to make satisfactory progress in the program
- when the student ceases to be enrolled as a full-time postgraduate coursework student, or discontinues their study
- if the University determines that the student is guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information
- if the student does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave
- if the student is granted permanent residency in Australia. Students must immediately advise the International Office and the Faculty Office about any changes to their visa status

How to Apply
There is no application form for these scholarships. If you wish to apply, please submit a personal statement with your application for admission to the International Office. This personal statement should set out your academic and extra-curricular or professional achievements, and outline why you want to undertake your chosen course and what you hope to achieve following graduation.
Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific) Scholarships
The Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific) offers students the opportunity to study both at the University of Sydney and one of four selected partner universities in the Asia Pacific with particular expertise in human rights and democratisation. The degree consists of a foundational semester and a one-week inter-sessional intensive at the University of Sydney and a second semester at one of the partner institutions.

Up to 30 scholarships are available for citizens of countries in the Asia Pacific region to undertake the Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific). Successful applicants for the scholarships will receive funding for their tuition fees and contributions to accommodation, living expenses and airfares.

To be eligible, for the Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific) Scholarship you must be a citizen of one of the following countries:

Endeavour Australia Program
The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government's internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. A smaller number of awards are available for participants from Europe and the Americas.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)
International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)
The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) scheme is funded by the Australian Government and provides tuition fees to top quality international postgraduate students who wish to enrol in a research degree at Australian universities.

Applications are assessed on academic merit and research potential. In addition to the IPRS, the University of Sydney awards an International Postgraduate Award (IPA) to IPRS holders. The IPA provides a stipend/living allowance to all IPRS recipients.

The IPRS is available to students commencing in both the March and July Semesters. Students must indicate that they would like to be considered for the IPRS by completing the relevant section of the Postgraduate Research Application form (271kb pdf). To be considered for the award, applications MUST be received by the International Student Office by:

- 31 July of the previous year for Semester 1 (March) commencement
- 31 December of the previous year for Semester 2 (July) commencement

To be eligible for the IPRS, you must:
  • Be an international student commencing full time enrolment in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at this University.
    If you commenced your HDR in the previous year, but due to the timing of your application and subsequent enrolment were unable to be considered for an IPRS, you may apply and be considered for an IPRS during the current round of IPRS application.
    Students in this situation should complete the IPRS Special Application Form (112kb pdf). This form MUST be received at the International Student Office by 31 August of the current year.
  • Be a student undertaking study in a subject area identified by the University as within the areas of its current and emerging research strengths.
  • Not hold a research qualification regarded to be equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorate degree, or, if undertaking a Research Master's degree, not hold a research qualification regarded to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Masters degree.
  • Not have held an AusAID scholarship within two years prior to commencing the IPRS.
  • Not be receiving a scholarship for which course tuition is a component under any other scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution.
  • Not previously have received an IPRS, unless the previous IPRS was for a Master by Research degree that you have completed and you are now applying for a doctorate research degree.
The University awards approximately 30 IPRS awards each year. Successful candidates will be notifed in:

– late October/early November for Semester 1 (March) commencement
– April for Semester 2 (July) commencement

Note that only successful applicants will be notified.

In addition to the IPRS awards, commencing students may also be considered for the University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS). The USydIS is open to all research disciplines, however participation in the USydIS program each semester is at the discretion of the Dean of each Faculty. No application form for the USydIS is required and eligible applicants will be considered during the IPRS selection process in October/November for scholarships to commence in Semester 1 (March), and in early April for scholarships to commence in Semester 2 (July).

The USydIS will cover tuition fees and a living allowance similar to the IPRS.

Walter Mersh Strong Scholarship
Dr. W.M. Strong was a medical administrator who bequeathed his estate to the University of Sydney for the purpose of encouraging education and research in areas that will assist in the social and economic development of Papua New Guinea. This scholarship is offered to citizens of PNG to pursue postgraduate coursework studies in the following degrees:

  • Master of Commerce
  • Master of International Business
  • Master of Transport Management
  • Master of International Public Health
  • Master of Engineering
This scholarship is currently on hold until further notice.

Thai Government
The Thai Government offers Thai students the opportunity to apply for a Thai Government Scholarship. The scholarships are normally available for students in their last year of their bachelor degree or who are currently studying a masters or a PhD. Fulbright
The Fulbright program was created by the US Congress in 1946 to foster mutual understanding among nations through education and cultural exchanges. Grants are available for one year to postgraduate American students who require supervised field work or who need to use Australian research facilities to earn credit towards their US degrees.

Students who have been awarded a Fulbright scholarship are exempt from tuition fees while studying at the University of Sydney.

Chilean Government Bicentennial Scholarship Program for Australia and New Zealand
The Chilean Ministry of Education through the National Commission for Scientific Research and Technology (CONICYT) offers scholarships to Chilean students wishing to study postgraduate qualifications at universities in Australia and New Zealand. The scholarships are for Masters and Doctorates programs in most areas of study.

Commonwealth Scholarships
Any Commonwealth country that wishes to do so may institute awards under this plan; however not every country participates and others review their participation on an annual basis. Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP)
The IFP provides opportunities for advanced study to exceptional individuals who will use this education to become leaders in the respective fields, furthering development in their own countries and greater economic and social justice worldwide. IFP is funded by the Ford Foundation and it has invested US$280 million over ten years to 2010.

The IFP provides support for up to three years of formal graduate-level degree studies. Fellows are selected from countries in Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Russia (US nationals are not eligible).

Jason (Joint Academic Scholarships On-line Network)
JASON is an on-line database of scholarship information for postgraduate students. It has been initiated by a consortium of Australian universities and is presently administered by The University of Melbourne.

The JASON project has been endorsed by the Australian National Council for Deans and Directors of Graduate Schools and the Australian Vice-Chancellors Committee. It is intended to assist students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies (either within Australia or internationally) gain access to current information regarding funding opportunities through various scholarship programs run through universities, charitable foundations, government and private institutions.

Michael H. Rathgeber Scholarship (for residence at International House)
The scholarship was established in 1971 by a gift from Dr and Mrs Henri Rathgeber, to establish the Michael H. Rathgeber Scholarship in memory of their son who lived in the University’s International House from its inception until his death in 1969. This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or postgraduate student of the University of Sydney with a good academic record or with special abilities, who would benefit from residence in International House and contribute to its purpose - but who would not be able to live in International House without financial assistance.
The Scholarship will be for 50% of the International House fees at the time for a single study bedroom accommodation during an academic year. The scholarship will be awarded for one academic year but may be awarded for a subsequent year or years. This scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney on the advice of an International House Selection Committee. Preference will be given to an Australian Aboriginal or a student from Papua New Guinea or the Pacific Islands.

Council for Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR) Scholarship Program
CAAR scholarships are offered to citizens of the Arab League countries who wish to undertake short term postgraduate study in Australia. The Arab League countries are: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, the Palestine Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The scholarships will meet the costs of university course fees, travel, establishment in Australia, and living expenses for up to 12 months’ study.

CAAR was established by the Australian Government in January 2003 to strengthen ties between Australia and Arab countries. The Council’s role is to promote greater understanding and acceptance of Australian and Arab cultures, values, beliefs and diversity. The focus is on commercial and people-to-people links and it also works to strengthen academic and educational ties.

Talentia Scholarships for Spanish or European Union Member State Nationals
Talentia Scholarships offer tuition fees and other financial assistance to Spanish nationals or nationals of a European Union Member State with a residential, educational or employment connection to the state of Andalusia, to undertake postgraduate programs at selected prestigious universities including the University of Sydney. Application deadlines are:

Vietnamese Government Scholarships - VIED (Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources)
The Vietnamese Government, through Vietnam International Education Development (VIED), offers scholarships for postgraduate study overseas. VIED scholarship holders may undertake postgraduate studies in the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at the University of Sydney. Coursework programmes offered include the Graduate Diploma in Agriculture, Master of Agriculture, Master of Science in Agriculture, and the Master of Agricultural Economics. VIED scholarship holders may also apply for the Doctor of Philosophy in Agriculture.

World Bank Institute: Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP)
The Joint Japan / World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is administered by the World Bank Institute (WBI) and sponsored by the Government of Japan, to help create an international community of highly trained professionals working in the field of economic and social development. The scholarship is for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development, and is open to students from participating countries (World Bank member countries eligible to borrow) who have received a Firm Offer of Admission to a Masters degree.

The JJ/WBGSP covers the cost of tuition fees, a monthly stipend, health and accident insurance and the cost of a return air fare. A travel allowance of USD 500 is also provided.

Application can be submitted online via the WBI website, or in hard copy, by 31 March each year. The application process is aligned with the northern hemisphere, with results announced in June; accordingly, most applicants would probably commence studies at the University of Sydney in Semester 1 the following year.

Research Experience
I prepared organic extracts from plant samples for bioassay and isolation of compounds.  I did bioassay, such as germination, herbicidal, and insecticidal activities using the prepared plant extracts. I did chromatographic separation of bioactive plant extracts for isolation of active components. I also got a little experience of chemical structure determination by UV, IR, NMR, and MS spectrometry.
